Understanding DSL's Manufacturing Approach
Bringing Designs to Life
DSL prides itself on transparency in its working processes. We warmly invite clients to visit our manufacturing facilities and experience first-hand how we transform electronic designs into physical, functioning, and robust PCB assemblies.
Witness the intricate process and the many facets involved in bringing a design to life, from conceptualisation to the final product, showcasing our commitment to openness and quality.
Expertise in PCB Assembly
The production of a PCB assembly or a fully assembled electronic product is a testament to the harmonious collaboration between advanced technology and human expertise. Modern machinery, equipped to handle high-tech and ultra-fine pitch components, accurately places them onto PCBs and applies solder in areas beyond human reach.
These intricate processes, involving hundreds of pins beneath devices, are made possible by cutting-edge technology. However, the role of skilled human operators is equally crucial. They expertly control this sophisticated machinery and manage the placement of mechanically complex components that automated machines cannot handle.
This integral synergy of human skill and technological precision is the cornerstone of creating a flawless final PCB assembly, showcasing DSL’s commitment to integrating the best of both worlds in our manufacturing processes.

By the Power of a Machine
DSL makes use of cutting-edge automated machinery in our fully automated SMT (Surface Mount Technology) line. This marvel of engineering takes a bare PCB and transforms it into a fully populated board. The process begins with the precise application of solder paste to thousands of pads, followed by the placement of parts on each pad.
Our state-of-the-art Pick and Place machines are capable of positioning up to 16,000 individual electronic components per hour, and we operate two such machines for maximum efficiency. The PCB then travels through a 12-phase specialist conveyor oven, where the solder is expertly melted, ensuring each component is securely and accurately attached.
By the Hand of a Human
While our complex SMT machinery plays a pivotal role, it’s the skilled human operators that bring it to life. These specialists meticulously set up and monitor the machinery, ensuring flawless operation. However, the capabilities of SMT machinery have their limits. The assembly of through-hole electronic components, requiring a level of precision and care, is entrusted to the expert hands of our operators.
Alongside this, any additional assembly tasks, including box builds, are carried out manually. This blend of human skill and machine precision underscores DSL’s commitment to quality and excellence in every aspect of PCB assembly, from the smallest component to the final product.
Integrating Human Skill and Machine Precision
At DSL, the combination of human expertise and machine efficiency is essential for successful manufacturing. This collaboration is particularly evident in quality control, where the precision of both elements is leveraged to ensure exceptional workmanship.
Our 3D Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) machine exemplifies this integration. Utilising thousands of photos, it rigorously compares each PCB assembly to a predetermined, high-quality baseline. This process significantly streamlines the inspection phase, saving extensive manual inspection time. By employing this advanced technology alongside skilled human oversight, DSL achieves a balance of speed and accuracy, ensuring the highest quality standards in our manufacturing processes.
